First, an honest word about the volcano
Villa Tanen sits in Tanen village at around 630 m — outside Merapi's exclusion zones, which cover 3–7 km around the summit. Merapi is an active volcano with an alert level that changes over time; daily life and tourism in Kaliurang and Pakem carry on as normal, and the jeep tours operate within the permitted areas.
We deliberately make no safety promise here that could be out of date tomorrow. What is always true: our staff live and work on this mountainside and follow the situation day by day. What is the Merapi jeep tour ("lava tour")?
The jeep tour is the best way to feel the raw power of the volcano without climbing it — black lava fields, a guide who knows every story, and an open jeep bouncing across the 2010 eruption fields.
The Merapi jeep tour — locally called the lava tour — takes you across the fields of the 2010 eruption in an open jeep seating 3–4 people, with a local driver-guide who shows you what the volcano did here and how life on its slopes carries on. Choose from three routes: Short (around 60–75 minutes), Medium (about 1.5 hours) or Long (2–2.5 hours), departing from the basecamps at Kaliurang and Kaliadem.
The classic stops are Museum Sisa Hartaku — a family home half-destroyed in 2010 and deliberately left as the eruption found it — and the Kaliadem bunker. Longer routes add photo stops such as Lost World Castle and the Stonehenge replica out on the lava plain, and there's a popular sunrise version for early risers.
Fair warning: this has grown into a slick, large-scale operation with hundreds of jeeps. In high season and around holidays (Idul Fitri, Christmas and New Year) you should book ahead, and surcharges apply. Parts of the track are unpaved and bumpy — that's half the fun.

Can you climb Mount Merapi?
No — Merapi's hiking routes (Selo and Sapuangin) have been closed since May 2018 and climbing is prohibited. The national park actively enforces the ban and there is no prospect of the routes reopening. If a website still promises you "the summit of Merapi", walk away: it's illegal and genuinely dangerous.
That's the honest answer, and it's why you won't find the climb in our activity list — guests once left the villa late at night for it, but those days are over. What you can do to get close to the volcano:
- The jeep tour across the lava fields — the best way to get high on the flank, with the story told properly (see above).
- The sunrise jeep run — dawn on the lava plain, no climbing required.
- Climb Mount Merbabu instead — Merapi's neighbour across the valley is open to hikers (via Selo).
- The volcano museum, a walk from the villa — understand the mountain without climbing a single metre (below).

Merapi Volcano Museum — a walk from the villa
The Museum Gunungapi Merapi is the region's volcano museum, within walking distance of Villa Tanen on Jl. Kaliurang km 22 in Hargobinangun — walk straight in and you're face to face with aerial photographs of glowing lava flows. Inside you'll see how Indonesia keeps watch on its most active volcano — seismographs, monitoring maps and footage of eruptions — and how people on these slopes live with the mountain, from eruption stories to the myths and traditions wrapped around it. Merapi erupts roughly every 5 to 10 years; an hour here explains why all of Yogyakarta keeps one eye on the north.

Ullen Sentalu — Javanese court culture, just up the road
Ullen Sentalu in Kaliurang is the museum of Javanese court culture — paintings, photographs, batik and the intimate stories of the royal houses of Yogyakarta and Solo — and it's practically around the corner from Villa Tanen. Privately founded by the Haryono family, it can only be visited with a guide, in small groups with timed entry — and it's precisely those stories that make the visit.
There are two set tour formats: Adiluhung Mataram (around 50 minutes — culture, batik and royal family histories) and the longer Vorstenlanden. No photography inside — which, honestly, is exactly why it stays so calm and beautiful in there.

Around Kaliurang and Pakem you'll find nature (waterfalls, Tlogo Putri, the Plunyon Kali Kuning valley), the jeep basecamps, the volcano museum, family attractions like Merapi Park and Bhumi Merapi — and a coffee scene that has flourished in recent years. This is Villa Tanen's backyard: not a day trip, but the place you're actually staying.
Let's be honest: the Kaliurang of older guidebooks — a leisure park with a hot-air balloon and bumper cars — no longer exists in that form. Today's Kaliurang is greener and more grown-up: nature, view cafés and the volcano itself are the main attractions.
Nature: Tlogo Putri, waterfalls and Plunyon Kali Kuning
Tlogo Putri marks the entrance to Kaliurang's old recreation area (entry for foreign visitors around IDR 20,000, indicative), with forest paths and waterfalls on the slope. A little further on, Plunyon Kali Kuning is a green river valley that has become one of the region's favourite photo spots.

If you're looking to escape the heat of Yogyakarta, this is where you do it. Villa Tanen sits at around 630 m, and you feel it the moment you arrive: the air is noticeably cooler and fresher than in the city, and there are fewer mosquitoes up here than down on the hot plains. Temples and city by day, cool village evenings on the veranda — that rhythm is exactly why guests choose the hills.
Coffee with a volcano view
Merapi's southern slopes are coffee country. At Kopi Merapi you drink coffee grown on local plantations with the volcano itself in view, and warung Kopi Klotok in Pakem has become famous across Indonesia for its Javanese breakfast and lunch — come on a weekday, because at weekends the queues are real. Merapi Golf — 18 holes, 5 km from the villa
Merapi Golf is an 18-hole course set high on the volcano's southern slopes, 5 km from Villa Tanen: you tee off with Merapi rising behind the greens. The villa lends out 2 golf sets free of charge. The course has varied fairways and greens, and visitors rate it consistently highly.
The course is open daily and welcomes the public; clubs, caddies and golf carts can be hired on site, and there's a clubhouse with a restaurant.
