Pasar Pakem — join our staff at the local market

Pasar Pakem is Pakem's local market on the slopes of Mount Merapi, running since 1993 — a ±10-minute drive from the villa, and you're welcome to tag along when our staff do the villa shopping there. It's not a tourist market; it's where the neighbourhood buys its own vegetables, fruit and fish.

That's exactly its charm. Market women sing out their wares, the stalls spill over with tropical fruit and dried spices, and yet — year after year — it stays pleasantly clean and never crowded, the cool mountain air off Merapi still hanging between the stalls. Beyond fresh food you'll find household goods, clothing and souvenirs, and on some days students sell second-hand clothes. Above all, try the snacks typical of the Merapi region — our staff will point out what to get and what it should cost. Prefer to explore on your own? The market is easy to reach by bus or taxi too.

How does the traditional batik photoshoot work?

Two of our neighbours in Tanen will photograph you in traditional Javanese batik clothing: wedding planners by trade — one is also a beautician and hairdresser, the other a photographer.

As she wraps the sarong around you — a rectangular length of batik, worn on Java by men and women alike, with a blouse on top — she tells you which pattern you're wearing, and why. Traditional batik, dyed with wax, is never just a print: the pattern reveals a person's rank, generation and family. Then she does your hair and make-up, the photographer finds the light, and you fly home with professional images no souvenir shop can sell you.

Where do you drink good coffee around Pakem and Kaliurang?

A steaming cup on a terrace, Merapi filling the morning sky in front of you — that's yours a short drive from the villa. Warung Kopi Klotok in Pakem has become nationally famous for its breakfast and lunch, and at Kopi Merapi they pour coffee grown on the volcano's southern slopes.

Kopi Klotok is the phenomenon: people travel across Indonesia for its simple Javanese home cooking, so expect queues at weekends. Around it, a whole new generation of stylish cafés has sprung up across Pakem and Kaliurang — many with a terrace looking straight out at Merapi, made for a slow morning coffee.
