Location & getting there
Where is Villa Tanen located?
Villa Tanen sits in the village of Tanen (Hargobinangun, Pakem, Sleman), on the edge of a real Javanese kampong on the southern slopes of Mount Merapi — about 21 km north of Yogyakarta, at ±630 m among the rice fields. The full address is JL Boyong Kaliurang RT01/25, Hargobinangun, Pakem, Sleman, Yogyakarta. Well away from the crowds, yet the temples and the city stay within day-trip reach.

Where should I stay between Borobudur and Prambanan?
The hills north of Yogyakarta — around Pakem and Kaliurang — keep both temples within day-trip range (each about an hour's drive) while staying cooler and quieter than the city. Villa Tanen, a staffed traditional wooden villa at ±630 m, is an owner-run stay up here.
Is Kaliurang cooler than Yogyakarta?
Yes — at around 630 m on Merapi's slopes, the Kaliurang–Pakem area (including Villa Tanen) is noticeably cooler than Yogyakarta city (±28–29 °C), with fewer mosquitoes. Evenings are cool enough to eat outside on the veranda.
How do I get from Yogyakarta airport (YIA) to the villa?
By car it's about 2 hours from YIA (Kulon Progo) to the villa. The transfer isn't included: take a taxi at the airport, or let us arrange a pick-up for you in advance (price on request). An alternative is the train to Yogyakarta and a taxi from there — worth it only if your train leaves promptly.
Do I need a driver in Yogyakarta?
Driving yourself isn't recommended for visitors to Java; Villa Tanen provides a car with an English-speaking driver-guide — fuel and parking included — who also helps plan your days. Most guests use him for the temples and day trips.
Can I walk or cycle from the villa?
Yes — the Merapi Volcano Museum is within walking distance, rice-field and village walks start right at the gate, and two mountain bikes are free to use. A member of our team will happily walk with you.
How far is Villa Tanen from Borobudur?
Borobudur is about an hour's drive from Villa Tanen — an easy day trip with the villa's driver-guide; the staff book your entry slot ahead, so all you have to do is step in and take it in.

The villa & rooms
How many guests can stay at Villa Tanen?
Villa Tanen sleeps up to 12 guests in 6 double rooms across two floors, plus 2 more in a free-standing garden studio (Rumah Pojok). Book the villa and the studio together for one group and you sleep up to 14. Book the whole villa and it's yours alone — no other guests.
Can I book just one room?
Yes — you can book the whole villa, one floor, a single room or the studio. If you book one room, the other rooms on that floor stay empty, so the bathroom is yours alone — at single-room rates.
Do the rooms have private bathrooms?
Each floor has one bathroom with a hot-water shower and toilet — and Villa Tanen only rents one party per floor, so whenever you book a room, that bathroom is effectively private. We call it our bathroom guarantee.
What is Rumah Pojok?
Rumah Pojok ("corner house") is Villa Tanen's free-standing studio for two, tucked into the back corner of the walled garden, with a large private bathroom, fully equipped outdoor kitchen, veranda, TV and Wi-Fi. The garden and pool are shared with villa guests.
Does Villa Tanen have staff?
Yes — staff are on site 24/7: daily breakfast and housekeeping are included, the pool is cleaned every day, and an English-speaking driver-guide is available at extra cost. The staff put it simply: they make sure you don't miss a thing.
Is breakfast included?
Yes — a daily breakfast (Indonesian or European, your choice) is included for every guest at Villa Tanen, along with fruit from the garden, water, tea and coffee. Lunch and dinner can be cooked for you at a modest extra charge.
Is the pool child-friendly?
Yes — the round pool has a shallow children's and paddling section that slopes gently into the deep middle (up to 2 m), so the little ones have their own safe corner while older swimmers do lengths. It's cleaned daily and sits inside a fully walled 3,000 m² garden — please supervise young children in the water. The walled garden itself is a safe playground: badminton, table tennis and plenty of running space.

Is Villa Tanen good for a multi-family holiday?
For three families Villa Tanen is practically purpose-built: six double rooms over two floors (one bathroom per floor), a shared living room, a large veranda and a walled 3,000 m² garden with pool — room for up to 12 guests. The kids run free in the garden while the grown-ups keep the veranda.
Is Villa Tanen a traditional Javanese house?
Not quite — Villa Tanen is a traditional wooden house built in a North Sulawesi style, set on Java on the edge of a real kampong untouched by mass tourism. It was built as a home, not a resort — which is exactly how it feels.
Can we have lunch and dinner at the villa?
Yes — our hostesses cook lunch and dinner for you: traditional Indonesian dishes (or European on request) from fresh local produce, with fresh juices, for a modest extra charge — around Rp 40,000 for lunch and Rp 60,000 for dinner per person. Special requests are welcome, and you're free to cook for yourself in the kitchen too.
Can you hold a wedding or retreat at Villa Tanen?
Yes — the grounds of Villa Tanen lend themselves to events such as weddings, meetings, workshops and yoga retreats. WhatsApp us your plan and dates, and we'll think it through with you personally.

How do I book Villa Tanen?

How does the deposit work?
You only pay after our personal confirmation: a 30% deposit by bank transfer within one month of booking, and the balance no later than one month before arrival. Every detail — dates, price, account information — is put in writing in advance, so you know exactly where you stand before you transfer anything.
Is it cheaper to book direct than through Airbnb?
Yes — booking direct means booking with the owner, without platform commission and with direct contact before you arrive. Prefer Airbnb's platform protection? That's fine too — the listings are ours.
Is Villa Tanen legitimate? How do I know it's not a scam?
Villa Tanen has public, verifiable listings on Airbnb (per room, for the whole villa and for the studio) and on huisjetehuur.nl — with guests since 2013 — and a Dutch owner you can see and contact. You book directly with the owner, with personal contact before arrival and clear terms on the booking page.

Things to do
Can you climb Mount Merapi?
No — Merapi's hiking routes have been closed since May 2018 and climbing is prohibited. Instead, take the Merapi jeep "lava tour", visit the Merapi Volcano Museum (walking distance from Villa Tanen) or climb neighbouring Mount Merbabu.
How do Borobudur tickets work now?
Borobudur now has two ticket types: a grounds ticket and a separate climb-up ticket for the temple itself (±1,200 visitors per day in 8 guided sessions, mandatory Upanat sandals included). Book 3–7 days ahead at ticket.borobudurpark.com — Villa Tanen's staff will help arrange it.
Can you still watch the sunrise at Borobudur?
Yes, two ways: the limited sunrise ticket on the temple itself (±4:30 am, ±100 people per day, around IDR 1,000,000, online only) or — far cheaper — sunrise from Setumbu Hill or Svarga Bumi just outside the complex.
Can the villa arrange a Merapi jeep tour?
Yes — Villa Tanen's staff book the Merapi lava tour for you: an open jeep (3–4 people) across the 2010 eruption fields with a local guide, from ±1 to 2.5 hours, roughly IDR 350,000–750,000 per jeep.
What is the Ramayana Ballet at Prambanan?
The Ramayana Ballet is an open-air dance performance staged with the illuminated Prambanan temple as its backdrop — Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, 19:30–21:30, tickets from about USD 8. The classic night out from the villa.
Can I take a cooking class at the villa?
Cooking here means learning from the hostesses: their Javanese cooking workshop starts at the market (Pakem or Yogyakarta) among the fresh ingredients, then moves to the kitchen for the finer points of Javanese cooking.
What UNESCO sites are near Yogyakarta?
Three: Borobudur, Prambanan and — since 2023 — the Cosmological Axis of Yogyakarta (Sumbu Filosofi), the 6 km royal axis aligned between Mount Merapi and the Indian Ocean. Villa Tanen sits at the Merapi end of that line.
