How do Borobudur tickets work now?
Since 2023–2024, Borobudur has two ticket types — a grounds ticket and a separate climb-up ticket. A grounds ticket lets you into the park, up to the foot of the monument; to climb the temple itself you need the climb-up ticket. The climb is capped at around 1,200 visitors a day, spread over eight sessions (roughly 08:30–15:30), always with an official guide (included in the price) and on mandatory Upanat sandals. Climb tickets must be booked 3 to 7 days ahead on the official site, ticket.borobudurpark.com — the same goes for your Borobudur tickets in 2026. Or simply ask us: WhatsApp us.

Why go to all that trouble for one temple? Because this is one of the most breathtaking Buddhist monuments on earth. Borobudur was built between 750 and 850 as a stepped pyramid wrapped around a hill, its nine levels mapping the Buddhist cosmos. For the climb you'll wear Upanat sandals, woven slippers that protect the ancient stone (your own shoes stay below). A session lasts about two hours, in groups of 10 to 20, with a guide who reads the reliefs alongside you — stories you would walk straight past on your own.
And honestly? The new system is an upgrade. Where thousands once shuffled across the terraces at the same time, you now stand up there with a small group. Quieter and richer than it used to be — you just need to plan a few days ahead.
Can you still watch the sunrise at Borobudur?
Yes — two ways. There's a dedicated sunrise ticket for the temple itself: entry around 04:30, a quota of about 100 people per day, around IDR 1,000,000 per person, online only. You stand in the first light up on the terraces, mist still low over the valley — expensive, but unforgettable if you want the temple at its stillest.
If you'd rather have the same golden light without that price tag, watch the sun come up from Setumbu Hill or Svarga Bumi just outside the complex — with Borobudur rising slowly out of the morning mist as your backdrop. Not a consolation prize, but an experience in its own right.
Insider tip: take the earliest climb session you can get, even if you skip the pricey sunrise slot. The air is still cool, the low light rakes across the reliefs, and the grounds are at their quietest. Bring a light sweater — after a night at our elevation, you'll know mornings on Java can be crisper than people expect.
Why you won't want to miss this: for that half-hour up on the stupa terraces, where a thousand years of stone slowly warms under your hands and the mist lifts out of the valley below you.

What to wear: keep your shoulders and knees covered — this is a sacred place. The Upanat sandals are handed to you for the climb; your own shoes stay below. Bring water and a light sweater for the early morning.

An honest word about Borobudur — what's changed
Picture it: you're up at five, driving down the mountain in the dark — and then the quota is full or the climb is sold out. That's exactly what we'd like to spare you. So we'd rather tell you upfront what's no longer possible:
- Borobudur's old "sunrise to sunset" ticket is gone. You can no longer roam the temple at will; the climb is a timed, guided session of about two hours. Older travel blogs (and, in fairness, our own old website) describe a situation that hasn't existed since 2023.
- Turn up without a booking and you may find the quota full. Climb tickets must be booked 3–7 days ahead; deciding on the day rarely works — least of all for the sunrise slot (±100 places a day) or at weekends, when the climb regularly sells out.
- Sunrise on the temple itself is expensive (around IDR 1,000,000 per person). If that's not your budget, Setumbu Hill or Svarga Bumi is not a consolation prize but a genuinely beautiful alternative.
- Crowd moments: weekends and Indonesian public holidays (around Idul Fitri and Christmas/New Year) are far busier, and by midday the sun beats hard on the stone. Go early, go midweek.
What you get in return: smaller groups, a guide who unlocks the monument for you, and terraces with room to breathe again. Plan it well, and you'll see Borobudur at its best in years.
